چکیده

Some researchers claim that language acquisition is critically dependent on experiencing linguistic input in order of increasing complexity. We set out to test this hypothesis using a simple recurrent neural network (SRN) trained to predict word sequences in CHILDES, a 5-million-word corpus of speech directed to children. First, we demonstrated that age-ordered CHILDES exhibits a gradual increase in linguistic complexity. Next, we compared the performance of two groups of SRNs trained on CHILDES which had either been age-ordered or not. Specifically, we assessed learning of grammatical and semantic structure and showed that training on age-ordered input facilitates learning of semantic, but not of sequential structure. We found that this advantage is eliminated when the models were trained on input with utterance boundary information removed.

Psychometric Properties of the Persian Word Pairs Task for Declarative Memory Assessment

Objective: According to the declarative/procedural model, the semantic aspect of language depends on the brain structures responsible for declarative memory. The word pairs task is a common tool for evaluating declarative memory. The current study aimed to design a valid and reliable task for evaluating declarative memory in Persian children at learning and retention stages and to investigate i...

Structured Semantic Knowledge Can Emerge Automatically from Predicting Word Sequences in Child-Directed Speech

Previous research has suggested that distributional learning mechanisms may contribute to the acquisition of semantic knowledge. However, distributional learning mechanisms, statistical learning, and contemporary "deep learning" approaches have been criticized for being incapable of learning the kind of abstract and structured knowledge that many think is required for acquisition of semantic kn...

Distributional semantic phrases vs. semantic distributional nonsense: Adjective modification in compositional distributional semantics

In this talk, I discuss the ability of compositional distributional semantics to model adjective modification. I present three studies that explore the degree to which semantic intuitions are grounded in the distributional representations of adjective-noun phrases, as well as provide insight into various linguistic phenomena by extracting unsupervised cues from these distributional representati...

Distributional properties of language and sub-syllabic processing units

During the past few years, several studies have drawn attention to the role of distributional characteristics in the segmentation of speech into word units. In the present chapter, we examine the role of distributional constraints in the acquisition of sub-syllabic language processing units. In particular, we suggest that specific processing units such as the rime might emerge from the distribu...

The Acquisition of Word Meaning through Global Lexical Co-occurrences

The acquisition of word meaning has been extensively studied for the last thirty years in the field of language acquisition. However, the question of how children acquire word meaning remains highly controversial today. Recently, a number of computational studies have examined the emergence of lexical representations in connectionist networks or similar statistical systems, suggesting that word...
